The Pull – 7-30-14

may140852Last week was strong. Leading off, Batman ended its long-running Zero Year arc. While good, I felt that the entire arc fell flat with me on many levels. The whole thing seemed drawn out and relatively uninspired. Don’t get me wrong, though. Although this particular arc didn’t hit home for me, it still is one of the better books I have been reading. In fact, I can’t think of many more books as good as this. It’s just the expectations that I had for this coming off of the likes of Court of Owls and Death of the Family may have been too high. Maybe giving Zero Year another read will give me a better light on it. I’ll admit, I read this all as each issue came out, so maybe the fragmentation dulled this bat’s fangs for me.

While talking about DC, let me give another shoutout to Injustice. I can’t say how much I love this book. Things are about to get real next issue and I can’t wait. I mean, come on…a book where Superman is the bad guy and the Green Lantern Corps brings an entire planet to earth to fight him with? Yeah, count me in.

And finally, before I move on to my pull for this week, I’d like to mention Trees real quick. Read my review for issue three and you’ll know how much I love this book. Warren Ellis is killing it these days. Trees is no exception. From the masterful art to the fantastic character development, this is a book you need to be reading.

And without further ado, here is what I plan on picking up this week:

Wake #10

Low #1

Cyclops #3

Guardians of the Galaxy #17

Hawkeye #19

Uncanny X-Men #24

X-Men #17

may140566First thing’s first, Scott Snyder’s Wake is ending. This is sad, and exciting to me. It’s sad because this fantastic series is ending, but the fact that we can get a small, self-contained series with a clear beginning and end is something I truly love. At times I get tired of the serialized, never ending stories that thrive in this medium. When something as awesome as Wake, Trillium, and Dead Body Road come out, I am happy because I know that I am getting a good story with an ending. And this also goes with TV. How awesome was True Detective? Fargo? Agree? Disagree?

Moving on, we have Low #1 by Rick Remender which sounds very promising, we have Rucka’s excellent and fun Cyclops series and…get ready for it…HAWKGUY! Man what a mess this series has been as of late. No, I’m not talking about the story, that’s great, I’m talking about the release hell that’s been going on. Sure, Matt Fraction is doing great things outside of Marvel with Sex Criminals and Satellite Sam, but damn, this guy’s work with Hawkguy is just about as fantastic a book that you can ask for. I really don’t know what is going on there, but I get the feeling that he just doesn’t want anything to do with Marvel anymore. What do you think? Let me know in the comments as well as what you plan on reading this week.

That’s all I have for now. Talk to you all later!
